Important Issues Regarding Quicklime Windows OS Installation.

Dear Valued AKCP Dealer,

Thank you for letting us know about this, and good to know the issues were resolved successfully when installing the Windows version of Quicklime.

Please see below for the list of important steps to consider when installing the Windows version.

1. Users MUST install all available OS updates for Server2022, because it’s an older OS and both Quicklime and its components (Rancher Desktop, Kubernetes etc.) require the updates to work.
   Without the updates the WSL2 install will not work properly, and consequently QL cannot be installed.
   Ideally, to avoid QL installation issues the Windows Update needs to be done before running the QL installer.
2. The QL installer might not be able to turn on some required OS features automatically for WSL2. In case of trouble installing, I’ve saved the necessary commands (see below).
3. The QL installer will check the running environment and prerequisites, and will not allow installing QL if there’s something missing, or there are insufficient system resources (memory, disk etc.).
   Note that if users attempt to install QL without installing the OS updates, QL will always fail to install at the WSL2 requirement check, then again at the Kubernetes connection check, and this cannot be fixed without installing the Windows updates first.
4. If QL installation failed earlier due to the missing OS updates, Rancher Desktop also fails to install automatically and the installer will always fail at the Kubernetes connection check step.
   To fix this, users need to run the Rancher Desktop installer manually: “C:\Program Files\AKCP\Quicklime\rancher-desktop.msi” then after this re-run QL installer again to complete the setup.

The Windows OS updates are really important, as if they are missing, it causes a lot of other side effects.

Troubleshooting for WSL2:

Run these commands to enable the required Windows features for WSL2 manually:

dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux /all /norestart

dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:VirtualMachinePlatform /all /norestart

Reboot after these changes.

Check WSL status in a command line, it must show “Default Version: 2”:

wsl –status

If it’s not set to v2, set it manually (the QL installer will also warn about this):

wsl –set-default-version 2

If there’s an error message about a missing WSL2 kernel, download and run this update manually:

https://wslstorestorage.blob.core.windows.net/wslblob/wsl_update_x64.msi
